PA6
Polyamide 6 (PA6) is one of the most frequently used engineering plastics. The material possesses excellent processing properties in combination with good general and thermal performance. It has greater impact resistance than polyamide 6.6 (PA6.6), at the expense of a lower modulus and higher moisture absorption.
Depending on the load, PA6 is usable for prolonged periods of time at temperatures of up to 110°C. The material is capable of withstanding brief exposure to temperatures of 180 to 200°C. PA6 absorbs approximately 3% moisture at 23°C/50% RH and 9.5% when saturated in water. This can alter the dimensions of the product after injection moulding. The moisture acts as a softener and causes the glass transition temperature to drop from 50°C to 0°C at equilibrium, thus increasing the impact resistance at room temperature, while the modulus and strength of the material decrease significantly.
PA6 is excellently resistant to oils, greases and aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as to most halogenated hydrocarbons. It is not resistant to acids and alkalis. The UV stability of PA6 is better than that of most other engineering polymers. Qualities treated with carbon exhibit even better UV stability.
